Dylan Hoyle

Noughts & Crosses

Dylan Hoyle is a Cross who enters the story as a practical ally to Jude and Morgan during their attempted escape from a surrounded hotel. He offers them false identities and a disguise plan, but his assistance does not dissolve Jude’s suspicion: the scene makes cooperation a matter of immediate necessity rather than trust.

Identity and Introduction

Dylan is identified as a Cross when he appears in the hotel room with Jude and Morgan. The men are trying to get out while the hotel is surrounded, and a Cross present with them asks whether they are the chauffeur and secretary. Morgan checks the plan with Jude, who agrees to proceed. Dylan’s presence links him to the escape effort, though the evidence does not explain how he came to be involved or what his broader role has been.

Role in the Escape Plan

Dylan provides the practical means for the two fugitives to pass as hotel staff: he says they have worked for him for eighteen months, produces false papers from his jacket, and hands them over. He warns that the authorities will begin checking every room in less than five minutes, making the disguise an urgent response to the search rather than a longer-term arrangement. He also tells them to match their appearance to the photographs on the false IDs.

His instructions extend beyond the papers. Dylan directs Jude and Morgan to clothes in the wardrobe and wigs and glasses in the bathroom, and insists that their chance of success depends on following his directions exactly. The plan therefore rests on coordinated impersonation, a narrow window of time, and Dylan’s knowledge of the materials prepared for them.

Relationship with Jude and Morgan

Jude receives Dylan’s help without accepting him as trustworthy. He refuses Dylan’s offered handshake, and when Dylan begins to explain himself, Jude cuts him off. Jude’s thoughts make the division explicit: he does not trust Dylan or Crosses generally and is prepared to respond violently if Dylan appears to betray them. The cooperation remains conditional, governed by danger and the lack of alternatives.

Morgan, by contrast, initially starts to accept Dylan’s handshake and asks Jude whether the plan is acceptable. Jude’s glare stops him. Their different responses show that Dylan’s arrival tests not only the escape plan but also the fragile coordination between the two Noughts: Morgan is willing to engage, while Jude retains control through suspicion and forceful caution.

Narrative Significance

Dylan’s brief appearance places an act of cross-racial assistance inside a relationship structured by entrenched distrust. He offers concrete help, but the scene does not present that help as enough to erase the social divide or Jude’s expectations of betrayal. The false papers and borrowed identities make the escape depend on passing as someone else, while Dylan’s precise instructions and the approaching room checks give the encounter its compressed urgency. The evidence establishes his function in this episode, but leaves his motives and subsequent fate unstated.
